Realistic Spending Money

Hi there just wanted to know peoples opinions whether £400 is going to be enough spending money for 2 people for a friday(midday) to monday (am) trip.

We are a young couple and have no qualms about doing things cheaply wherever possible. we are mostly going to be wondering round taking in the major sights visits to a couple of museum, maybe treat ourselves to a good meal one night. nothing too fancy really... obviously i will have my good old flexible friend on hand should we require it. Just thought i%26#39;d try get some reassurance that this budget is realistic and maybe some tips on not to expensive but nice places to eat.

Hi there,

This question is really hard to answer, because it depends on your spending habbits, and everyone%26#39;s different. I would think that you would be just fine with 400 if you don%26#39;t go crazy with your spending.

One trap to avoid is spending too much on meals. That is not to say that you should/will not have some great meals in Paris, but we found that it added up having a nice linch and dinner in the same day. Choose one or the other. My wife and I tend to like nice dinners, so that%26#39;s where we spent our money. For lunch, we would picnic on a bench (Baguette, wine, cheese), or just get a quick bite at a cafe.

Some, however, say that it is better (cheaper) to go to the really nice restaurants for lunch, when the prices are down, but the quality is great.

Hopes this helps

Im with you there, rather nice for dinner than lunch, and you can find great dinnerplaces where you dont have to pay more than €30 for 3 courses.

I think that it might be better to go for lunch at the really expensive places if you have a budget over £400 for 3-4 days but under unlimited amount of money.

I would do it with 400, but then that includes no shopping. But else I think you will be fine. Btw is it including Hotel? Then maybe it can be tight....

|||

No hotel is already paid for. £400 is liteally for food, activities and transportation within paris.

Breakfast is included as part of the cost of the hotel so that is at least one meal taken care of.

So its about €280 each thats about €90 per day and person (if you count fri and monday as one) lets say €40 for dinner pp, 20 for lunch, that leaves 20 for leisure, museums etc thats fine. And probably you will maybe have lunch for under 10 if you buy kebab or so and you can have dinner some of the days for maybe 20, that will leave alot of money for lets say visiting cafes etc. I think 400 will be fine, no worries! I like a restaurant called le petit canard its on 19, rue Henri Monnier 9th arr. Set menu is €30.

Still slightly concerned about the £400 budget, are VISA (uk barclays current account) and Mastercard (barclaycard) going to be widely accepted just incase i run out of money.

|||

Visa is accepted just about everywhere, including UK debit cards, (but not in many taxis), including pubs and restaurants. I would say the French use these even more than the Brits.

I would have no problem spending 2 1/2 days in Paris with Mrs Wiz and spending less than £400 - including hotel.

As long as you dont fall into the trap of spending money in pavements cafes you will be OK. A decent dinner can be had for less than 30€ (add 10€ -15€ for a litre carafe of wine), if you spend more than 6€ or 7€ for breakfast they%26#39;ve seen you coming, and you can picnic for lunch a couple of times.

As far as restaurant recommendation, there are thousands in Paris. Some arent very good (strangely enough, they are the kind that get visited because they are so %26quot;parisian and romantic%26quot;) but most are pretty good, some are exceptional, and price is no indication. I can%26#39;t give you names - my fave restaurant has shut - but if you can get a copy of %26quot;the rough guide to French Hotels and Restaurants%26quot; you will find plenty of options.

I was frankly suprised at how little we had to spend on attractions and meals. Most of the hotels include a continental breakfast. Our hotel, the Duminy Vendome, had fruits, yogurt, cereal, etc. And the small bistros were under $100usd/couple. Control yr spending on liquuer, and you%26#39;ll got off cheaply.

|||

This is what I spent on a trip to Paris last year and it can%26#39;t be too atypical. Breakfest was included in the hotel we stayed at, but next year we are not going to included breakfast at the hotel. Costs are for two people and in USDollars, and we always had a bottle of wine with dinner. This adds at least 1/3 to the meal.

Hi there...............just to let you know, we will be going at the end of april for the same amount of time.............we too are taking £400 and the plastic just in case............last time we went, we took £300 but did not eat at any restaurants, only from pizza and kebab shops and mcdonalds or sandwich shops (not healthy but fun). We paid to get in several museums, a trip down the siene, brought alcohol and goodies for the hotel room and lots of gifts and momentos and had 2 taxi parisiens to and from the gare d nord.........We found it quite difficult to spend our money really and ended up buying ciggies, aftershave and perfume at the duty free shop before boarding the train........................this time we plan to do similar but throw in a few meals at bistros and take a visit to Laduree and Angelina%26#39;s so we will probably need more. Hope this helps x
