Bordeaux with family

This June my family (including 2 daughters ages 10 and 6) are planning a trip to Paris (one week) and the SW area of France (about 10 days). We love hanging out in markets, walking in the countryside, beaches, visiting quaint towns and all sorts of kid-friendly activities. Any suggestions on whether to make our base in SW France be Toulouse or Bordeaux (or other?) and what to plan to do while we%26#39;re there? We have never visited this area and are really excited.

If you are interested in beaches I certainly would not pick either Bordeaux or Toulouse, both of which are large cities. Toulouse is a long way inland. Bordeaux is on the estuary of the Gironde and is not a beach resort. (You do have a map, right?)

You might consider St. Jean de Luz as a base. The town is lovely, the nearby city of Biarritz has a lot to offer, the beaches are spectacular (this is perhaps the best surfing area in Europe), you can explore the western Pyrenees including Pau and Lourdes, and cross the Spanish border visiting San Sebastian (about 30 minutes by car) and Bilbao and Pamplona (each about 90 minutes).

When will you be travelling?
