How long to get to Versailles?

How long does it take to get to Versailles?

What%26#39;s the best way to get there?

How long should we plan to stay?

Is there something else we could incorporate on our trip to Versailles?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Please forgive that I am working off memory:

The RER out of Gare St. Lazare (I recall) will get you to Versailles in about 45 minutes or so. It is a short walk from the train station to the gates of Versailles. Plan on a long morning or afternoon, depending on your tolerance for opulance (mine is limited).

Perhaps others can respond as to addtional activities in the area.

The bus from Pont Sevres takes about 25 minutes, number 171

RER %26#39;C-5%26#39; ligne trains (heading in the direction of VERSAILLES-Rive Gauche...any train with a %26#39;..V xxx..%26#39; designatior...train frequency to and from Versailles-RG is approx .1-every -15 mins, during most of the day and evening) from any of the %26#39;C-5%26#39; ligne%26#39;s stations located along the Left Bank (Saint Michel-Motre Dame...Musée d%26#39; Orsay...Invalides...Pomt de l%26#39; Alma...Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel...you must be careful to board only a %26#39;C-5%26#39;..%26#39;V xxx%26#39; train...or switch to one before Champ de Mars-Tour Eiffel...or risk an unintended visit to Pontoise). Depending on which station you board the %26#39;C-5%26#39; train, the travel time to the end-of-the-line, at VERSAILLES-Rive Gauche will be 40-47 mins. Then perhaps an 8-10 minute stroll from the station up the the gates of the chateau (just follow the crowd). As a general rule, it should probably take between 60-75 mins. from your hotel lobby or apartment in central Paris to the entrance gates of Chateau de Versailles.

As previously noted, you may also access Versailles via a SNCF / TER train from PARIS-Gare Saint Lazare...but these trains take you to VERSAILLES-Chantiers and it takes a bit more time to walk to the chateau from this station....and won%26#39;t provide quite the same convenience to various %26#39;..connecting..%26#39; Metro lignes and bus routes.

The RER C train is convenient and safe. From central Paris (single digit ARR) the RER C line Versailles-Rive Gauche train is approx 40 min ride with a 5 minute walk. BUT from the same RER C train station, the opposite direction VERSAILLES-Chantier train is a common mistake for the uninformed tourist, taking 45-60 min with 30 min walk.

I thinks it%26#39;s best to go in the AM, as close to opening as poss leaving Paris between 8-9. You can tour the chateau, with plenty of time for lunch, MA Hamlet area, and gardens. You should plan on staying til 3-4 pm.

The town of Versailles is often overlooked, and there are many restaurants if you would like to stay for an early dinner.
