Do most place have house wine? Are their different types of house wine in some places? How would l ask for house white wine? Does is usually come in a carafe or a bottle? Thanks for your help; I am just worried I won%26#39;t know what to say- I don%26#39;t speak any french!

Pardon my French but I think it is something along the lines of %26quot;Carafe la Maison vin Blanc%26quot;.

House wines are usually called %26quot;la cuvée du patron%26quot;. Ask for the wine menu or %26quot;carte des vins%26quot;.
You can ask for %26quot;un pichet de vin blanc%26quot;. Un petit pichet will be 25 cl,
You can also order %26quot;un pichet de 50 cl%26quot; or %26quot;un pichet d%26#39;un demi-litre%26quot; - both half a liter.
You can also order wine by the glass : %26quot;un verre de vin blanc%26quot;.
Vin blanc = white wine
Vin rouge = red wine
Rosé = well, rosé wine !
|||
You can also ask for it by region in many places :
Un Sancerre blanc
Un Chablis
Un Pouilly fumé
and rare, but yummy, un chateauneuf du pape blanc, svp!!!

and if all else fails, look for the second cheapest wine on the list and point.............

Ironicly, the cheapest wine is usually the best, particularly when in wine growing regions.
When asking for the local wine I have good luck specifying %26quot;un vin du pays%26quot; rather than a %26quot;vin de pays%26quot;. This may result in finding real gems particularly in Burgundy, Bordeaux, and the Rhone valley.

When in Paris I always ordered the house wine. Initially to avoid confusion in ordering wine by region vs grape variety. While I can always pick a good French wine here in the US, there were just too many unfamiliar wines from which to choose. However, I soon found that the house wine is very a worthy choice.
Always good to carry a small language quide, although I only used it once, it was a situation worth the cost. It kept my daughter, who does speak French BTW, from ordering a meal she could not have eaten.
