Sacre Coeur

I%26#39;m wondering if the experts can help with some plans. We%26#39;re having lunch at Le Grand Vefour on Monday June 4th at 1230. I%26#39;m not sure how long lunch will take I guess it depends on us. However, given the time of year is it safe to assume we have time to take the Metro back to our hotel in the 5e and then head up to Sacre Coeur to spend the rest of the day taking in the sites up there and getting back before dark.

Well, sure. You can get %26#39;sundown%26#39; times at www.weather.com, under historical averages.. I imagine it will be at least 8pm

If your lunch took 3 hours, you%26#39;d be up to Montmartre by 4:30 or so. You don%26#39;t even have to be back %26#39;by dark%26#39; unless you%26#39;ve got something planned for evening.

|||

Unless you have specific plans %26quot;after dark%26quot; on that night PS, you might consider staying in Montmartre, having dinner, and experiencing the view from the steps of the Sacre Coeur after the sun goes down. IMHO, it%26#39;s something not to be missed.

Thank you very much that settles that. Now a bonus question, if we feel a bit peckish, what%26#39;s available cafe etc in that area?

|||

There are somewhat touristy cafes circling the Place du Tertre, and aren%26#39;t bad really..

If you walk a bit %26#39;southwest%26#39; to Place des Abbesses, there is a street (rue des abbesses) lined with cafes....

I hope the funicular is fixed by then

I take it the funicular is some sort of contrivance to get you from the bottom of Sacre Coeur to the top. I am in relatively good shape and don%26#39;t mind the stairs, is it a necessity?

|||

No, the funiculaire is not a must.have for people with healthy legs and knees - but half way up you may experience some huffing-and-puffing and you think that your lunges will explode any minute. The worst I have ever tried in Paris was the stairs from metro Abbesses. I didn%26#39;t think that they would be any higher than stairs in ordinary metro stations.... Halleluja, they went up 6 floors before we reached the street - as the station is located down in the bottom of the hill of Montmartre !!

Don%26#39;t worry - I am a very big girl in a very sad physical shape and I climb up and down all the stairs in Montmartre, Parc de Belleville and around Parc des Buttes Chaumont - and usually survive it....

Thanks for your insight on the stairs. I know this is unrelated to Sacre Coeur but it is closely related to stairs. I would like to climb the stairs of the Eiffel Tower to the second level. To do this what line do you stand in and where do you get the ticket for the lift to the top of the tower? Do you get everything at the bottom and then walk up to the second level to get the lift? If one decides at the first level they can%26#39;t make it to the second, can they get a ticket on the first level for the lift to the second? This question just tired me out!

|||

ParisSurprise: when you coem to the Eiffel Tower, you will not for one second be in doubt about which entrance is for the stairs (escaliers) - no waiting lines there ! :o)

I would never try my luck walking up the Eiffel Tower - so I can%26#39;t help you with you question about %26quot;midway-regrets%26quot;....

For the best view in town with no waiting lines, go up Tour de Montparnasse (skyscraper), an express-elevator takes you up to 56th floor, and then you can walk the rest of the way (3 floors) up to the roof, where there are telescopes. Fantastic view of Champs de Mars and the Eiffel Tower from there.
