Paris to Normandy to Provence

Hello!

We will be in Paris for six days in September 07. We then plan to take the train to Bayieux, rent a car, drive to the D-Day beaches, stay over night and then the following day make our way to Provence and then stay there for five days. We are then taking the TGV back to Paris to spend one last night and then catch our flight back to Canada. Our question is...how the heck do we get from Bayieux to Provence by train?! Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi Lulu

The fastest way to get from Bayeux to Provence by train is probably via Paris with a change from Gare St Lazare to Gare de Lyon - there is one at about 9am from Bayeux that gives you over 2 hours between trains to and from Paris and then by TGV to Avignon by 4pm but it depends where in Provence you want to arrive.

Be sure to check this post from Morgan B before you book your train travel and above all do NOT use RailEurope for buying train tickets unless you like being overcharged.

There is really no convenient way to get from Bayeux to Avignon or elsewhere in south-eastern France without going through Paris. Most departures from Bayeux will also require a change in Caen but there are a few direct trains to Paris. if you are only researching timetables you might find the German rail site at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en more user-friendly than the SNCF site but it will not show you fares or allow you to book tickets.

BTW when you are researching timetables stc. it will probably be helpful to have the correct spelling of BAYEUX.

Good luck!
