Adding to our itinerary.......

Oh my god!!!! we are going back to Paris on April 26th, I am sooooo excited I just cant wait! We will be staying in the same hotel (hotel europe) in the 15th arr just around the corner from the great lady herself, the Eiffel Tower......this time we are taking my mum who has just retired (a fit 60 year old with a touch of arthritis) we will cover some old ground that we saw last time to show my mum as she has never been and want to take in a few extras new to us too, here is the plan so far, can anyone help to fill in the gaps?

Thursday 26th - arrive midday, unpack, walk to the alma tunnel then up to the champs d elysee, see the arc de triomphe, taking a slow walk back to the trocadero to see the sights, hopefully as its getting dark........Evening take a trip down the siene on a bateaux parisian, slow walk back to hotel through the champs de mar.

Friday 27th - metro to the louvre, see the mona lisa, venus de milo, and egyptian relics mostly then a few other bits..........walk down through the gardens d%26#39; tuilleries, wander over to the place venadrome to see how the other half live..............here theres a gap....... until we go to notre dame in the evening for a meal and to see the church

Saturday 28th - metro to sacre cour sight seeing and mont matre to see the moulin rouge..........this is our final full day so if you can add something for early evening/night here?..................

Sunday 29th Breakfast then head home BOO HOO !!!!!

What about hopping over the Seine to the Musee d%26#39;Orsay or perhaps to Invalides to Napoleon%26#39;s Tomb? The Musee Rodin is right next to Invalides as another optin. Closer to Notre Dame is the Latin Quarter - how %26#39;bout a stroll there or maybe Marias?

|||

We did Invalides last time.....the latin quarter seems appealing and we are now considering going up the eiffel tower but only as far as level 1 or 2 at the most, we are not that good with heights but would like to say we did it.

Can anyone tell us what the name of the famous bar is on the champs elysee thats renown for its hot chocolate? and also......the name of the department store on the backs of the seine that you can go to the top floor and take in the view? (it was under refurbishment last time we went in nov 2005)

I think the hot chocolate place you are thinking of is Angélina on rue de Rivoli — unless you are thinking of Ladurée on Champs-Élysées, more often mentioned in conecion with its macaroons than its hot chocolate.

The department store is (or rather was...) Samaritaine. It remains closed and there are currently no plans to re-open it AFAIK.

If you do decide to stroll the L.Q. you might want to visit the Cluny museum with its splendid Unicorn tapestries. Otherwise I find St. Germain des Prés a more interesting area to just wander...

|||

AS you walk through the Tuileries why not stop at the l%26#39;Orangerie for a dose of Monet?

|||

Thank you for the info..........the macaroon place (laduree) was the one we were thinking of but Angelina%26#39;s sounds fantastic so it may very well be both we visit, as they are both in areas that we will be near too anyhow!!!!

We are amazed to find that the department store is still out of action, I would have assumed that being in the centre of Paris it would have been refurbished or sold on by now!

The isssue with the Samaritaine is that structural defects affecting the safety of the entire building were discovered. My guess is that the cost of restoring the bulding would be enormous and that nobody wants to take the responsibility of tearing down such an iconic structure. For all I know there may even be some kind of preservation order on the entire building. There are certainly many lesser places that are covered in this way.

There is a rumour floatiing round that the building may be converted to a luxury hotel with a rooftop restaurant but I do not think there is any basis for this notion other than wild speculation. It would be a cool place to stay if that ever did happen though...

Use the search box on the right above the posts to search on Samaritaine and you will find several discussions on the topic.

What a shame!.......I am sure something fabulous will bring it back to life in the near future, if its a luxury hotel then its probably going to be out of reach to many but that adds to the chic that already leaves millions world wide spellbound!
