Bringing A Laptop

I%26#39;ll be staying for 11 nights in a paris apartment that has free unlimited high speed internet. I have a laptop, would you recommend bringing it? Do I need any sort of special connectors for the internet? Im pretty sure I need one for the power plugs.

I forsee it being a hassle of using internet cafes. Have traveled with the laptop by air around the US...not so sure what the security will do over there though. Any thoughts, ideas would be appreciated.

you need an RJ45 jack -- the usual DSL connectors (if you get there and they don%26#39;t have the right cable or you didn%26#39;t bring it, you can just go buy one -- we have done this a couple times) most laptops run on 220V -- make sure yours does, then you only need a plug adapter

if the apartment has a DSL connection then definitely bring your laptop -- if not then the cafes are very handy

I agree with grace,

I take my laptop every year. Usually the apartment has a connecting cable (the end that goes into your pc is the same as here). You could email them and check to see if there%26#39;s one in the apartment.

This past year, the apartment had WiFi DSLIwhich I have at home) - but we never could get it set up to use and the local manager didn%26#39;t know the %26#39;password%26#39; for access. Luckily, they also had a cable for the server so all was fine.

Airport security treats laptops exactly the same way they do in the US - have it out and be prepared to fire it up.

You%26#39;ll need a power plug adapter, but if you look on your laptop%26#39;s power cable, the adapter there should say %26quot; input 100-240V%26#39; then you won%26#39;t need a converter.

Thanks for the input.

I think just to have a dvd player on the plane will be well worth it.

Make sure you don%26#39;t forget your headphones then - I did that one year :(

Do most of the transatlantic flights have electrical plugs between the seats?

Some of the US domestic flights have it.

The United flight we took a couple of months ago did not, neither did the Lufthansa one last year. Both originated at SFO.

Depending on airline/plane type, you may need a special %26quot;airline power adapter%26quot; if you want to use your laptop on the plane for a longer period of time (apparently, the EmPower DC inseat power system is the most widely used).
