apartment rental

Have sent deposit for studio rental on 12 rue des Tournelles - 75004 Paris

Owner is requesting remainder of rental payment sent before our arrival including a 250 euro security deposit (refundable). Payment can be wired, Travelers Checks or PayPal. Since we have only seen pictures of the apt through the listing agency, that seems risky. From reading other posts, this may be the norm? I have offered to pay w/ Travelers Checks upon arrival and await the owners response. Any thoughts?

It sounds not out of the usual. Apartments are almost always pre-paid - and often not refundable - one of their drawbacks compared to more traditional hotel lodgings.

We have been renting apt/houses all over europe for the last ten years, and have always had to pre-pay. Some require a security deposit, so just take your credit card details. I always take out travel insurance in case something happens since they are non-refundable. We%26#39;ve fortunately never been ripped off and never had a problem with getting what we paid for. Maybe they weren%26#39;t as clean as we hoped, but as described. I would suggest paypal as you have some recourse in case something goes wrong and probably the cheapest. If you use travelers checks, they probably will have to be in euros.

Thank you for your helpful advice! I am still trying to get in touch w/ owner to finalize details, but it%26#39;s good to know you%26#39;ve had positive experiences.
