Hello everyone - I am looking for a modest place to stay near the French Open at Roland Garros. My wife and I are not fancy folk, but we do appreciate the comforts of a clean bed with cafes and the metro within reasonable walking distance.
Any suggestions based on past experience?
Thanks!

budget? Modest means different things to different people.

I have never been to the French Open, but I believe the number 9 and 10 metro lines go out there, so I would be looking for a hotel near a stop on one of those lines, within 30 minutes or so of the stadium. I believe the closest would be hotels in the 16th (where Roland Garros is), the 8th, the 15th and the 7th.

libtravel: i am not sure on budget b/c i don%26#39;t know how expensive Paris is. in the US it is not uncommon for us to spend 80-100 USD for a hotel per night.

It%26#39;s not going to be easy to find something in that price range, as Paris is expensive. If I were you, I would try to find a good two-star hotel at around 100 euros ($125 or $130 a night). One that comes to mind and that is well reviewed on this site is the Hotel Muguet, in the 7th arrondissement, and I believe near the Ecole Militaire metro stop. There are other 2-stars in that area of the 7th, near the rue Cler, so that might be a good area for you to look in.
Hopefully, others will recommend more hotels in the 16th and 15th arrondissements, as those would be convenient for you.
There%26#39;s a hotel in the 15th that gets decent reviews and according to this site, costs less than $100 a night, and that%26#39;s the Hotel de l%26#39;Avre, although I don%26#39;t know how convenient it is to the metro you need.

I looked at the metro map, and the Ecole Militaire stop is not on a line (9 or 10) that goes directly to Roland Garros. You would actually have to go one stop to La Motte Picquet Grenelle and change there. You might also want to look at hotels in the vicinity of the La Motte Picquet metro stop, as that is a station where three lines intersect, making it convenient for getting to other parts of Paris, in addition to Roland Garros.

You don%26#39;t say how long you will be there. If a week, look into renting an apartment. Much cheaper usually.

A couple more thoughts.
First, if you don%26#39;t already know it, you should keep in mind that 2-star hotels in Paris don%26#39;t generally have A/C (although they may have fans). I was in France a couple of years ago during the week of the Open and it got quite warm. I was outside Paris when the temperatures hit the mid to upper 80s, and by the time I got to Paris it had cooled off a bit, but I still used the A/C in my 3-star hotel. If this could be an issue for you, you might look for reasonably priced 3-stars with A/C.
Second, another area you might want to look at is the Passy area of the 16th arrondissement, a quiet, upscale residential area with good services (restaurants, market, shops) and a couple of small hotels. It is also right across the river from the Eiffel Tower. This area is near two metro stops, Passy and La Muette, and the La Muette stop is on one of the lines that goes out to the Roland Garros area. The Hameau de Passy is a two star hotel on a garden that gets excellent reviews on this site -- although its rates seem to have gone up a bit -- it looks like it would cost $175-$200 during the period of the Open. Aother one, Les Hauts de Passy, looks like it%26#39;sin the $125-$130 range. There is also a 3-star in this area with A/C, the Passy Eiffel, although that would probably cost in the low-mid $200s.
Third, the Hotel de l%26#39;Avre, a reasonably-priced two-star that I mentioned earlier, is apparently right near the La Motte Picquet Grenelle metro stop, which would be convenient for you.

I was just going through the reviews on Les Hauts de Passy, and was surprised that one reviewer mentioned the good A/C, as this is a reasonably priced two-star hotel, and they don%26#39;t often have A/C. Also, the hotel description on Expedia doesn%26#39;t mention A/C, but that%26#39;s not definitive. If you%26#39;re interested in this hotel, I would probably check with the hotel to find out for sure. The rooms also have minibars. WIth A/C and a minibar I think this hotel would be a good value in warmer weather.
If you%26#39;re not accustomed to checking guest reviews on Trip Advisor, just enter the hotel name in the search box at the upper left, then click on the %26quot;go%26quot; box. When you get your results, just click on the hotel name, and you will get the hotel description, with reviews below.
