Low-cost accommodation for two in non-tourist neighbourhood

Hello,

My partner and I will be travelling around Europe for three months this year, starting from Paris. We will arrive mid-May at CDG, stay in Paris for five nights, and then pick up a Renault Clio from Renault Eurolease and head off to …

My question is about accommodation in Paris.

We would like a low-cost room (~50 euro/night, or less?) for accommodation close to a metro station. We expect to spend all days sightseeing and would ideally like a hotel/B%26amp;B/room that is in a non-tourist neighbourhood where we can wander for an hour in the evening.

The Renault Eurolease office is on Avenue Jean -Jaures near metro station Porte de Pantin.

We see that the Hotel Belgrand is often recommended. This would require on RER and two metro lines to get to from CDG, and some changes to get out to the Renault office.

From looking at web sites I see that there are also hotels on Avenue Jean -Jaures, such as Hotel De Paris, but I do not know what the neighbourhood is like.

We would appreciate advice from those with knowledge of Paris on options that would suit our wishes.

Thank you, Martin %26amp; Eva

For the Hotel Belgrand, you would take the RER to Gare du Nord and the 26 city bus. The closest metro station is a bit of a walk.

Hi Martin %26amp; Eva

A lot of the cheapest hotels are actually near the centre

This site has a few near the price you want

Friends stayed here last April and said they liked it. It is in the Marais about a block or so from the Hotel de Ville and if you are ready to share a bathroom, you can get a double for 45 Euros. My friends had a bathroom and the cost is 60 Euros I think

This place used to get good reviews but the TA reviews include one that says the person was accosted by the desk clerk when leaving about some voucher payment. The other reviews are generally ok but for your budget you would have to have a share bathroom for 52.50 Euros. They don%26#39;t take credit cards and you have to pay cash (I would also avoid vouchers based on that review). The location is good on the border of the 5th and 13th near Gobelins and the bottom of Rue Mouffetard - not itself touristy but near enough that you can be in touristy areas quickly

hm, i%26#39;ve stayed in paris, and literally booked the cheapest rooms i could find online. i was impressed by the cleanliness and the areas of both. this was feb. 2005. i think they were between 30 and 40 per person per nite, canadian.

we stayed at the hotel luxia in monmarte, and it was noisy but clean. we stayed in the hotel belfort near charrone metro, and it was clean and quiet, very pleasant. we are students, so our expectations are low, but i am picky about beds and bathrooms and both were more then fine.

this spring we are staying at the hipotel paris atlas. we picked it due to its location near the green and orange line. i am nervous because it was even cheaper than our previous hotels, but based on the past experience we figured we could rough it a little more. it is about 25 dollars a nite each. has anyone been there?

we booked using venere.com and got a 4% discount online. you can use the booking code to get it too, its can really add up - BH5F85S

Thank you for the advice and pointers.

We have been considering B%26amp;B options and have found one that is stated to be close to metro Marx Dormoy.

Does anyone know about this are, or could provide a pointer to an internet resource that describes the area?

I haven%26#39;t been in that area in ages but I recall it as an uninteresting residential neighbourhood with nothing much to recommend it. The major feature of the area is the huge railroiad marshalling yards IIRC. It is also a *very* long métro ride — probably about 40-45 minutes depending where exactly you wanted to go — to the central areas of Paris.

Use the search box on the right of the page above the post and search for Cosmos. The Cosmos Hôtel. I checked it out a few month ago when staying nearby and you should find a link for it and some posts from me about the location. It is in an ab-fab (IMO) area (Oberkampf) just a short walk from the Marais and a short and interesting bus ride or a quick métro trip to anywhere else. I think a double room there would be about 55€. I am also aware of an inexpensive studio in the same area which would be well within your budget but (1) I do n ot know if you can rent for less than a week and (2) it is a sixth (French) floor studio with no elevator aptly known as %26quot;Chez Stairmaster.%26quot; You can find it on the SlowTrav website.
