Any suggestions for New Year Eve in Paris?

I know I’m planning early but I can’t help it I’m afraid. I am planning to take my wife to Paris for a New Years Eve as a surprise. Reading other forums it sounds like the Champs Elysees is the area to be in, spending the evening in a good restaurant before joining the crowds for Midnight.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts and ideas of what to do along with recommendations on hotels and restaurants.

Many Thanks,

Andy.

Amarsa - not sure you want to hear this, but I live in Paris and a couple of years ago we decided no more new year%26#39;s eves downtown! I would say that it%26#39;s definitely not the best time to visit the city - wait a couple of weeks and you%26#39;ll have the place all to yourself (as far as tourist numbers go). The hassle of having to reserve a place and finding yourself crammed into some restaurant with barely room to move (not very romantic), the when you finish, sharing the streets with very drunken and not-particularly-friendly groups of youths and trying to fight your way into a taxi because the whole notion of queuing goes away (perhaps a well-placed city centre hotel will get round this little problem - but be prepared to splash out a fortune!!), trying to figure out which metro stations are open etc. etc..

Maybe I%26#39;m jaded, and perhaps some of our fellow travellers have had a good experiance and will give you more helpful advice.

This looks like a rant, but I wanted to share an alternative idea with you for a romantic NY getaway: Vienna. We did this last year (in fact I proposed to my now-wife there). It%26#39;s perfect! If you book early enough you%26#39;ll get somewhere decent in the centre for much more value-for-money. Most of the festivities happen in the street - there are concerts in lots of different squares, ranging from classical music to hard rock, house, whatever you like. Little stores selling mulled wine and champagne everywhere. The atmosphere is great (no aggro!), and if you get cold and want to dive into a bar for a quick drink then you can - with everything happening outside you can still get into most places. Food for thought....
