Breakfast required?

We are planning a driving trip through Burgundy and Alsace-Lorraine. As we have been searching for and booking hotels, we have noticed that breakfasts are generally not included and run from 18-23 euros per person extra. Is it expected that we would have our breakfast at these hotels, or is it acceptable to go out and buy breakfast elsewhere? Am I wrong to think that the price for the breakfast is very high? We have generally been booking 3-star type places (Hotel Le Cep, Chateau Gilly, Hotel Regent Contades, etc). Thank you , Tennismom

No you do not have to have breakfast. I never eat breakfast in the hotel as the costs are ridiculous and I do not want to eat masses. My daughter never feels like anything to eat until mid-morning so no point in her having breakfast. We often just go and buy a pastry in the nearest boulangerie and then stop for a coffee when we feel like it.

I agree with JBart, get a pastry from a boulangerie. Pain aux raisin are our staple petit dejeuner while in France, many people prefer pain au chocolat or croissant.

In French hotels, typically breakfast is never included (while it is typically included in %26quot;gîtes%26quot;= B%26amp;Bs).

18-23 euros seem astonishingly expensive, unless it is a 4-star hotel with a gorgeous buffet. But indeed I have noticed this trend of hotels to invoice a ridiculous price for value as for breakfast.

Since a number of French people don%26#39;t take breakfast (or just a coffee), it is perfectly acceptable to go at a nearby café for breakfast, no problem!
